The story behind
Born in 2015 and based in Tavira, Southern Portugal, the true origin of Kozii is the journey.
Not only in the purely geographical sense but in the most important and noble sense: that of the experience of the human.
A journey is always a departure and a return to who we are, added by the knowledge of the difference. Kozii is born from this delicate territory that is the other and of the respect for what it is to be human. This is what inspires Cecília and Nuno to create.
A Vision Made of Travels
“We are tireless travelers, both out of love and vocation and decided to take years of experience in various parts of the world to build a brand of clothing and accessories that reflects not only an aesthetic but also what we believe in: a fairer world, sustainable and – yes, again – human.
Daughter of a nomadic family, I grew up with my family in Portugal, the US and Belgium and then I traveled to New Orleans, San Francisco and later Vancouver, while studying Cultural and Art Anthropology.”
When visiting her parents in Mozambique, Cecília began designing garments from Batiks with the local women, as a hobby.
After her graduation, she set off traveling around the world searching for new materials and techniques to make garments and accessories.
Seeking to make productions and simultaneously empower local artisans to improve in their own crafts, as a joint venture that, each year, ended in small handcrafted productions she would later sell to shops in Europe.
Rooted in Portugal
“For 8 years, I did productions in Mexico, India, Thailand, Brazil and Guatemala. Later on, together with Nuno, my partner who had a background in Environmental Management, decided to have kids and settle in a beautiful place where we could feel at home.
We chose Tavira, in the stunning Portuguese southern coast, and designed Kozii focused both on who we were, what we believed in and on how we thought we could fit in Tavira.”
“It was in India that we found our source of inspiration, more precisely in the city of Jaipur, in the state of Rajasthan.
Through the use of millennial tissue stamping techniques – such as woodblock printing, the oldest, simplest and slowest of all printing methods – we have created a line of clothing that is contemporary and at the same time safeguarding a tradition.”
The patterns that result from this are beautiful, both in their graphic simplicity and in their organic feel.
Kozii is gratified by the knowledge it earns to time, creating each piece slowly and thoughtfully, to the scale of who makes it and of who will wear it. The result is the delivery of exclusive collections of the highest quality.
Coherently to its very roots, Kozii’s exclusively designed hand-printed fabrics integrate contemporary fashion with sustainability, promoting the continuity of long-established textile skills and upholding the highest ethical and environmental standards in every step of its production process.
It is worth knowing Kozii and realize that there is the possibility of uniting beauty, functionality and difference.
In the whole, to realize that what matters and what moves Kozii is this permanent return. To us. To the human being. To our timeless journeys.
